Hardy to -20 degrees F or even colder! If you he ever yearned to be, as the song says, "picking up paw-paws, puttin' 'em in your pocket," Pennsylvania Golden is here to make that dream a reality! The first PawPaw developed specifically for cool climates, Pennsylvania Golden is a very hey-yielding variety with a tropical aroma and flor that may remind you of breadfruit. Related to the tropical Cherimoya (Custard Apple), PawPaw is actually a native U.S. plant. With huge lees that might look more at home in the jungle, Pennsylvania Golden is actually hardy to -20° F! In the wild it is a forest understory tree, but it also tolerates full sun. In fact, this adaptable plant will probably thrive just about anywhere within its hardiness range, given adequate drainage and water. The fruits, extra-large, highly aromatic, and among the sweetest of varieties, weigh at least half a pound each, and are rich, sweet, and custard-like, with hints of banana and vanilla. Expect generous yields -- at least 30 pounds a season -- beginning as early as the second year after planting. The tree reaches 12 to 15 feet tall, and needs apollinatorfor fruit set. Zones 5-9.
